Spring 2019

It’s time for a quick update on what’s new with Mason and Weed.

As we recover from a busy winter playing holiday shows and St. Patrick’s celebrations with Molly’s Revenge, we are working on arrangements for a new Mollys album that is set for release in June 2019. As usual, John and Stu will be teaching at music camps in Wallowa, Oregon (Fiddle Tunes) and Mendocino, California (Lark Camp) this summer, as well as playing various duo gigs and a few contra dances as well. They will join forces with Lisa Lynne and Aryeh Frankfurter in August and September for West Coast tours as New World String Project. And that’s the news from Mason and Weed… where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.

Across the Pond

New album set for release on May 16!

Fiddler John Weed and singer Stuart Mason will be recording our first album as a duo and doing a series of West Coast shows to promote the new CD in 2017. Slated for release in the spring, we have tentatively titled this project “Across the Pond.” The music promises to feature John’s most fiery trad-Irish fiddle tunes, Stuart’s American-roots songs as well as a sprinkling of old-timey tunes and newer surprises as well.

In early January, John and Stu packed up their fiddles, guitars, banjo, bouzouki, and mandola and migrated northward to the rugged Pacific coast near Fort Bragg, California to make this record. There in the misty gloom of towering redwoods and pounding surf we temporarily did shed the hustle and bustle of our modern lives and for one precious week, focused on our deep love for traditional music.

We enlisted the help of engineer and ethnomusicologist Ryan Davidson, who helped produce Stu’s TRADITION record, to capture the music. We have sent rough mixes to Jurgen Treys (of Cara, Litha) in Germany for mixing and mastering. Jurgen is the studio wizard who mixed and mastered the new album LIFT from Molly’s Revenge.
